World Cup Whistleblower Gunned Down

Posted: 07 Jan 2009 10:27 AM PST

Wish I had some good news to share about World Cup 2010. But I don’t.

Earlier this week Jimmy Mohlala - a member of the WC organizing committee, former South African FA executive and Speaker of the Mbombela local municipality - was murdered outside his home by unknown gunmen.

Nothing good about that. But this tragedy is made even more depressing by the fact that Mohlala had a reputation as a World Cup 2010 stadium corruption whistleblower.

There’s an informative description of the alleged corruption in Bill Archer’s great article, but here’s the gist of it:

Under South Africa’s “Land Redistribution Act”, large tracts were given (or given back) to tribes and clans who could show historical ownership rights.

The site for the Nelspruit Stadium [aka Mbombela Stadium] was given to a clan who in turn hired the Matsafeni Trust to manage it.

But when that site was chosen for the stadium, a trust administrator sold 6000 acres of land he didn’t own to the municipality for one Rand, or about eleven cents US. It was later revealed that the administrator is a business partner with the Mayor and another local politician. Imagine that.

Jimmy Mohlala was working to expose the swindle.

And now he’s dead.

Police are working on the case etcetera, but there’s a definite feeling in the air that this wasn’t just a random murder.

Obviously I don’t have knowledge of South African politics and don’t want to make any big allegations, but if Mohlala’s murder and his whistleblowing turn out to be connected, then I hope FIFA have the decency not to participate in the inevitable attempt to sweep this scandal under the rug.

Argentina v Brazil Translates To The Air Waves

Posted: 06 Jan 2009 02:00 PM PST

Our tips hotline (1-800-HOT-TIPS) received a great email today from Scott J on the spilling over of the Argentina-Brazil war of South American football, giving us a clear cut message as to its prominence: it knows no bounds.

Scott, in Argentina, is watching Conan O’Brien (American talk show host who is the bastard love child of Tarja Halonen & Gheorghe Muresan) which is broadcast in English and subtitled in Spanish. Then the subject of Pele comes up. This can only go well.

The interview with Judah Friedlander (comedian type) swings the topic of convo to soccer and this is what transpires in spoken English:

J.F. - Do you know who Pelé is?

C.O'B. - Sure, he's the greatest soccer player of all time.

J.F. - Yeah, he's my father

He’s not but…..wait a second, don’t quote me on that.

And the corresponding translation into Spanish Argentine:

J.F. - Conoces a Pelé?

C.O'B. - Claro, es uno de los mejores jugadores de todos los tiempos.

J.F. - Sí. Es mi padre.

Magically, Pele goes from the greatest player in spoken English to one of the greatest players post-translation.

Good to know subtitling in Argentina is subjective. Amazing how such a subtle tweak within one simple sentence can define a major part of an entire continent’s culture.

Amauri: “I Don’t Need a National Team”

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 05:53 AM PST

It’s official, Juventus striker Amauri is sick of being asked about international football. The 28 year old is Brazilian by birth but will soon be Italian by passport, and both Dunga and Marcello Lippi have made positive noises about calling him up for the Seleção and Azzurri respectively.

So… World Cup holders or Copa America holders? I can think of plenty players who would love to have that decision in front of them. But not Amauri. He’s so sick of all the speculation (he’d probably hate this post) that he’s threatened to say no to whoever calls him up.

“It seems like I want to put myself up for auction between Dunga and Lippi,” he told Italian daily La Repubblica.
“As that’s not the case, this is the last time I’ll address the subject. I won’t open my mouth again until I receive an official call-up from one side or the other, if that happens.
“At that point I’ll give my answer, which could be negative. I arrived at Juventus on my own legs, as a perfect unknown. That means I don’t need a national team”.

Quite a statement, eh? Especially with World Cup 2010 happening in about eighteen months time.

If you want to end the speculation, then why not just pick one? That would end it all pretty quickly.

So here’s what I think should happen: If Amauri can’t declare a preference, then he shouldn’t be allowed to play for either. Instead, players like Amauri should have their international careers decided by FIFA, who could assign “homeless” players a new national team. I hear the Cook Islands are looking for a new striker…
