Thailand v Lebanon: Brawls, Pouting, Pitch Walkoffs & Mistaken Identity.

Posted: 22 Jan 2009 08:40 AM PST

One probably wouldn’t expect much out of a Thailand v Lebanon international fixture. Judging by the “stadium” this game was played, everyone else is on the same wavelength. But when the game involves two brawls and not one, but two pitch walkoffs - well, gimme Thailand v Lebanon any day.

There’s really little besides 3 seconds of pseudo-brawl in the video - we’re still holding out hope more than one tv channel across the globe decided to whip up some highlights, hope is not high - but the game recap reads like a South American domestic league game. It even has a case of “mistaken identity”. Fantastic.

Team staff and stunned security guards twice had to enter the field to stop fights triggered by repeated scuffling between Lebanon’s Zakaria Charara and Thai defender Suree Sukha during the hosts’ 2-1 win in Phuket. With 14 minutes remaining, in an apparent case of mistaken identity, Charara struck Surat Sukha in the head in retaliation for his twin brother Suree’s earlier foul.

After the ensuing brawl, Lebanon stormed off the field in protest and were told to remain on the sidelines by incensed coach Emile Rustom, who had to be talked into resuming the match by Thai soccer president Worawi Makudi.

Five minutes later, Suree escaped a booking by the Thai referee after another vicious tackle on Charara, who started another melee by slapping Suree and captain Datsakorn Thonglao in the face.

Walking off the pitch and then returning really isn’t all that convincing, but coming back with the double slap in the face leaves no room for interpretation: they ain’t messin’ around - though number 9 in the vid desperately needs to work on not slapping like a 6 year old girl. Clearly we need more Thai & Lebanese football in our lives.

The Infamous Ballet Referee Gets An Accessory

Posted: 21 Jan 2009 05:00 PM PST

Remember the infamous video of the referee who has a bit too much pizazz from a few years ago? This one? Well the video is still floating around - deservedly so - but now it’s somehow managed to get even better, because now we’ve found out the reasoning behind his excessively elaborate movements: he was supposed to be wielding a light saber. Brilliant.

That’s a football stadium? This clearly is not going to go well.

Maradona Thinks PoTY Voting Rules are Stupid

Posted: 20 Jan 2009 09:53 AM PST

Is anybody else secretly glad that Diego Maradona is back in the public eye making public quotes? What in the world did we bloggers ever write about before?

His latest gripe? That the Player of the Year voting rules are stupid because he couldn’t vote for Lionel Messi.

“I had to choose somebody else, knowing that Lionel Messi is the best player in the world,” the Argentina coach told reporters, adding that he had voted for Manchester United and Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo instead.

Maradona said the rules banned coaches from voting for players from their own country.

“Whoever thought that up is stupid,” he said. “It’s incredible, I voted for Ronaldo when I wanted to vote for Messi but I couldn’t.” …

The FIFA award is based on votes by the national team coaches and captains of the 208 member associations of world soccer’s governing body.

I guess I’d probably be pretty upset under the same circumstances (although I’m not sure there’s any way I’d vote for Ronaldo, just because. Fernando Torres, maybe.)

I’m thinking that when Maradona gets sacked for Argentina, it would be a l ot of fun to let him replace Sepp Blatter at FIFA so he could make all the rules himself?
