Akon to Record World Cup 2010 Anthem

Posted: 12 May 2009 09:34 AM PDT

We’re about thirteen months away from World Cup 2010, so it’s time to start filling in a few details. Details like the official World Cup 2010 anthem, which will apparently be provided by American R&B singer/songwriter/producer Akon.

“I’ve been hired as musical director for the World Cup,” he told the Daily Mirror. “I will be overseeing the World Cup anthem and music at the ceremonies and I’m off to South Africa this week for meetings. I love soccer so it’s a great honour.”

So far, Akon’s quote to the Daily Mirror is the only available news on this. FIFA have yet to confirm, but I think we can assume he’s telling the truth.

Which raises the question: why Akon? Why is an American R&B sensation recording the official World Cup 2010 anthem?

A quick look at Akon’s Wikipedia page reveals that he’s of Senegalese origin and his real full name is Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam. So that’s a plus in the African credibility column.

But he also owns a South African diamond mine and denies the existence of conflict diamonds. “I don’t even believe in conflict diamonds,” he told The Independent in 2007. “That’s just a movie. Think about it. Ain’t nobody thought about nothing about no conflict diamonds until the movie came out.”

Hmmm. So that’s a possible negative in the human being column.

Whatever Akon comes up with should at least be a departure from the last two official anthems. Here are the 2006 and 2002 World Cup anthems, by Herbert Grönemeyer and Vangelis respectively. Neither of whom - as far as I’m aware - own South African diamond mines.

Herbert Grönemeyer - Celebrate The Day - 2006 World Cup Anthem

Vangelis - 2002 World Cup Anthem

And for those who (like me) weren’t all that familiar with Akon’s oeuvre before today, here’s the karaoke video version of his 2006 hit Smack That (featuring Eminem)…

Cristiano Ronaldo vs Original Ronaldo: Who’s More Likely Make World Cup 2010?

Posted: 08 May 2009 07:00 AM PDT

Both Ronaldos - the younger, prettier Cristiano and the older, more injury prone original - will be hoping to represent their respective countries at World Cup 2010 next summer. And someone had asked last summer which one stood the better chance, then we’d all have said Cristiano.

The Portuguese winger had just completed a 42 goal season for Man Utd and was about to lead Portugal into Euro 2008, while the older Ronaldo’s career looked to be over after yet another knee injury saw him one-legged, unemployed and rapidly gaining weight.

What a difference a year makes.

CR7 is still in good form (just ask Arsenal) but Portugal are trailing both Denmark and Hungary by seven points in UEFA World Cup Qualifying Group 1. Doesn’t matter how well he plays for Man Utd. If Portugal doesn’t go to the World Cup then neither does C-Ron.

Meanwhile the other Ronaldo has made a mockery of probability by getting himself fit, signing for Corinthians and scoring 10 goals in his first 13 games back from the dead (including this beauty). And now Brazilian national team coach Dunga is making positive noises about a possible Seleção return for the man they call O Fenômeno.

“I’ve said already that the national team doors are open for any player who is technically good enough,” Dunga told a news conference.

“He is certainly in excellent form and is being watched by the technical staff.

“It’s the first time since 2006 that he has managed to play more than 10 games in a row, so the trend is for him to progress.

“Ronaldo has never stopped scoring goals,” Dunga added. “He knows his potential. There is one year between now and the World Cup for everyone to work and earn a chance.”

OK, so it’s not a cast iron guarantee. But if Ronaldo keeps finding the net then he should get at least one more chance to wear canary yellow. And - unlike Portugal - Brazil are all but guaranteed to be appearing at South Africa 2010.
