Condederations Cup Semi-Fina: USA 2-0 Spain (or: Why Every Team in the World Should Play 4-4-2)

Posted: 24 Jun 2009 02:13 PM PDT

First of all, stop rubbing your eyes. This really happened.

The USA (the team that looked all but mathematically out after losing their first two games) just beat Spain (you know, the team that won Euro 2008 and recently set the record for most consecutive international wins with fifteen and tied Brazil by going 35 games unbeaten) 2-0.

Here’s the proof:

In the 26th minute Jozy Altidore muscled/turned his Villarreal teammate Joan Capdevila and hit a shot that Iker Casillas could only parry onto the post and into the back of the net:

Then in the 74th minute Benny Feilhaber skipped through the Spanish defence and played Landon Donovan down the right hand channel. Donovan squared it, Puique deflected it, Sergio Ramso thought he had all the time in the world, Clint Dempsey disagreed.

Before, after and inbetween those goals it was all about Oguchi Onyewu, Jay DeMerit and Tim Howard. The USA’s central defensive duo made header after header and last dicth tackle after last ditch tackle to deny David Villa and Fernando Torres. And when Spain did managed a shot at goal, Tim Howard was there to keep it out.

The US lost central midfielder Michael Bradley to a red card for this foul in the final ten minutes:

A little harsh maybe? But seems like Bradley, Clark and Klejstan are making sure Bob Bradley rotates his central midfield by taking turns getting red carded. Michael Bradley will miss the final through suspension, so it will be someone else’s turn to play center mid and get sent off.

But the real story for me is the USA’s formation. Playing 4-5-1/4-4-1-1 in their first two games, the US were woeful and deserved the 3-1 and 3-0 beatings that Italy and Brazil handed to them. But bringing in Charlie Davies to partner Jozy Altidore in a 4-4-2, they’ve now beaten Egypt 3-0 and Spain 2-0.

Basically, 4-4-2 is magic. The #1 team in the world was using it, and the first team to beat them in 35 games did so by using it.

Yes, the US spent most of this game defending. But they showed that you can defend just as well with 4-4-2 as with 4-5-1, but also maintain a threat going forward at the same time.

So how about it every team in the world? What say we ditch the one up front, get as many men as we can in midfield approach, and everyone goes back to playing 4-4-2? That way even games where we all think we know the winner before kick-off can still be enjoyable to watch.

Speaking of which… it’s Brazil vs South Africa in the other semi-final tomorrow. Kickoff is 8:30pm local, 7:30pm UK time, 2:30pm US Eastern. We’ll be LiveBlogging the game here on the front page from about 30 minutes before kickoff.

Iranian Players Who Wore Green Wristbands Are Now Banned/Retired

Posted: 23 Jun 2009 05:19 PM PDT

Remember how six Iranian players wore green wristbands for the first half of the World Cup Qualifier vs South Korea recently? Well, apparently four of those six players have now retired from in international football. Or - more likely - banned.

Here’s what The Guardian has to say:

According to the pro-government newspaper Iran, four players – Ali Karimi, 31, Mehdi Mahdavikia, 32, Hosein Ka’abi, 24 and Vahid Hashemian, 32 – have been “retired” from the sport after their gesture in last Wednesday’s match against South Korea in Seoul.

They were among six players who took to the field wearing wristbands in the colour of the defeated opposition candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, which has been adopted by demonstrators who believe the 12 June election was stolen.

Who's No. 1 in the NHL draft? SN Today looks at three candidates

In Defence of the Vuvuzela…

Posted: 22 Jun 2009 03:40 AM PDT

…it actually sounds pretty good in the hands of those who know how to play it.

The above video is of the Vuvuzela Orchestra, practicing in private and then performing at the South Africa vs USA game in Novemeber 2007. (Tip of the hat to this Pitch Invasion post where I spotted the video).

More importantly, I watched the Egypt vs USA game yesterday with precisely zero vuvuzela induced pain. Mostly because I forgot they were even there.

Maybe that was because I spent most of the game doing maths in my head (goal difference, goals scored, etc) or maybe because I couldn’t quite believe what was happening (are the USA really through to the semis?).

But most likely it was because I’d just gotten used to the sound after a week of watching (and listening to) the Confederations Cup. It was annoying to begin with, mostly because I wasn’t used to it. But five matchdays in, I’m 100% vuvuzela adjusted.

For a completely different opinion, read Chris’s Death to the Vuvuzela post.

Confederations Cup Recap and Highlights: Brazil and USA (yes, USA!) go Through

Posted: 21 Jun 2009 03:12 PM PDT

Okay, show of hands. Who, before today, predicted that USA — with one goal (a penalty), zero points and an excruciating -5 goal differential up to this point — would progress out of the group stages ahead of World Cup winners Italy and African champions Egypt?

Anybody? You, there, in the back? No?

Yeah, me neither.

For that to happen, Italy would have to lose by three to Brazil, and Egypt (a team I’ve always considered underrated) would have to lose to the US by a similar score. Improbable, right? Maybe even impossible?

And yet that’s exactly what happened.

In Egypt-USA, Egypt came in a little flat after losing Mohammed Zidan to a hamstring injury in the Italy game, and they never quite found their stride. And the US showed up ready to play, then had their confidence boosted by a fluky 21st minute Charlie Davies goal when Egyptian goalkeeper Essam el Hadary was taken out by his own player. And after that they never looked back. Further goals by Michael Bradley (on a Landon Donovan assist) and Clint Dempsey.

The US will have to hope they haven’t used up their miracle quota, because now they play Spain in the semis.

And in the other match, Italy had a night to forget. They especially won’t want to think much about a ten-minute period at the end of the first half, when Brazil scored all three of their goals. Although they did have some help from Andrea Dossena, who capped off the half with an own goal, put in like he meant it.

Ouch.

I caught a lot of the replay, and outside of those ten minutes, Italy had plenty of opportunities and didn’t really look bad. It’s just that Brazil looked better. And (dare I say it?) younger. Robinho and Luis Fabiano in particular looked on fire, and Italy had nothing to match that. I think we may be seeing some housecleaning (and maybe younger players?) in this team before World Cup.

And here’s what the semifinals will look like:

Spain vs. USA, Weds., 6/24
Brazil vs. South Africa, Thurs. 6/25

Confederations Cup Group B Liveblog: Egypt vs. USA AND Italy vs. Brazil

Posted: 21 Jun 2009 10:48 AM PDT

Final day of the group stages in the Confederations Cup. What are we doing to celebrate? A great big jumbo liveblog. Both games, one liveblog, all your main-page bloggers in one spot. I think Chris is going to take charge of Italy-Brazil, Daryl is going to head up USA-Egypt, and I’ll maybe bounce back and forth between the two. At least until the pain of watching Bob Bradley’s men get slaughtered by play against another non-CONCACAF side becomes too much.

(On the plus side? Gold Cup coming up. We can OWN that one.)

Liveblog below, and be sure to leave lots of comments.

Starting Lineup Italy according to FIFA: Buffon, Chiellini, Cannavaro, Toni, De Rossi, Iaquinta, Camoranesi, Zambrotta, Montolivo, Pirlo, Dossena.

Brazil:
Julio Cesar, Maicon, Lucio, Juan, Felipe Melo, G Silva, L Fabiano, Kaka, Robinho, A Santos, Ramires

Egypt:
El Hadary, A. Elmohamadi, Hani, A. Fathi, Hosni, A Eid, M. Shawky, A. Farag, A. Abdelghani, W. Gomaa, Abo Terika

USA:
Guzan, Bornstein, Onyewu, Dempsey, Davies, Donovan, Bradley, Clark, DeMerit, Altidore, Specter

(And it took me till I got to the US to realize that these are in numerical order, not team position order. I need more caffeine.)

As interleague play winds down, SN Today checks out MLB's week ahead
