Germany and Italy make the World Cup, Argentina get closer

Big day for the big guns today. Italy booked their tickets to the big party in South Africa next summer, with a draw against the Republic of Ireland (who now are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs). A late, late Alberto Gilardino goal denied Ireland a famous victory, and gave Italy confirmation of their spot in South Africa. It’d be wrong without the defending champions anyway, wouldn’t it?

They left it late, but they didn’t leave it as late as Argentina however, who needed a 93rd minute winner from Martin Palermo to inch them closer to a spot in next years World Cup. As things stand they still only sit in the play off place, their game next Wednesday is going to be absolutely huge. They play Uruguay, who sit just a single point behind them. A win for either side could jump them ahead of Ecuador and automatic qualification - Ecuador play already-safe Chile on the same day.

Meanwhile, Germany sweated out a sending off on Russia’s infamous Plastic Pitch to send them to the World Cup. Russia will have to be content with a place in the playoffs.

It’ll be Germany’s 15th successive World Cup Finals, and to be honest the idea of the Germans not being at a World Cup is a strange one. And I speak as someone who is obliged to not want them to do well at anything.

It was perennial World Cup goalscorer Miroslav Klose who sealed the Germans a 1-0 win, despite the inspiration of Arshavin and company, they couldn’t break the Germans down.

All eyes then, are on Argentina on Wednesday. Will they make it to the World Cup? Do you want them to? It’s going to be exciting either way.

Egypt still might make South Africa, Ivory Coast are there

That goal could prove to be pretty important in terms of World Cup Qualifying. Egypt needed a win to stay in the hunt for 2010, and they got that win thanks to that fabulous strike. What it means, is that there will be a HUGE match between Egypt and Algeria on Wednesday. the 14th on November.

Algeria are still favourites - if they win today they’ll be three points clear of Egypt with a better goal difference - but it does mean that the African champions are not buried just yet

Meanwhile, a Didier Drogba strike gave Ivory Coast a guaranteed spot in the World Cup pot, as the 1-1 draw they ground out against Malawi proved enough to make them unsurpassable at the top of their group.

Bring it on.

Japan 2018/22 World Cup Bid Unveils Secret Weapon: Astro Boy

The World Cup 2018/2022 bidding war just got serious. First we had the Australia 2018/22 team engaging in some guerrilla marketing by handing out goody bags at a rival England 2018/22 event. Now the Japanese 2018/22 team have unleashed Astro Boy (above).

For those unfamiliar, which until about 15 minutes ago included myself, Astro Boy (also known as the Mighty Atom) is a legendary Japanese manga character. He’s a powerful robot boy with human emotions. Right now his emotion include feeling patriotic about Japan’s 2018/2022 World Cup bid, as he’s going to be their Goodwill Ambassador.

I’m not 100% sure this is a good idea. Mostly because things that look cute in manga tend to look absolutely terrifying when made three dimensional. I’m submitting the unblinking image of Astro Boy the mascot (above) as Exhibit A.

But Astro Boy could be a useful mascot in another way. As Jeremy who sent us this email suggests: Astro Boy is a robot so powerful he could conceivably fly around the world and destroy every stadium in every other bidding nation. Imagine the look on the English FA’s faces if they had to rebuild Wembley again?

FIFA U20 Update: Not Your Usual Suspects.

The kiddie quarterfinals have arrived and, although Germany, Italy and Brazil have again found their way into the quarters of a major tournament, the rest of the participants hardly reads like a who’s who of international football. In fact this is something of a who ain’t in big footballing terms - the matchup between Costa Rica and United Arab Emirates says it all, really. Is this a reflection of the participants at a personnel level? Quite possibly, but that does set up the perfect opportunity for a tournament rife with Cinderellas.

And it didn’t stop the gods from setting up a finger-linkin’ match between Brazil and Germany.

The hosts (Egypt) are out. The young Spaniards are out. Nigeria, a typical stalwart at these levels, are out. Even upstarts Paraguay, both at youth and senior levels, have found themselves on the transatlantic flight back home.

The quarterfinal bracket reads like such:

So while being great at senior level doesn’t necessarily translate to the senior stage and vice-versa, it would appear the lack of big names at the tournaments has translated to a lack of big names in the quarters.

Brazil, predictably, put in a dandy of an individual attacking performance in the Uruguayan box, and the boys from the country south really never had a chance.

This is what you’d expect of Brazilian technique and attacking know-how - nothing more, nothing less.

Bjorn Kopplin wins hero status for the Round of 16 with two goals and an assist in a 3-2 victory, with the winner coming in the 92nd on the counter down to ten men.

The means of result, penalties, in seeing Hungary over the Czech Republic were pedestrian; Mate Kiss was not.
