Capello On Terry As Captain: “Not On My Watch!”

Posted: 28 Feb 2010 04:39 PM PST

FBL-WC2010-WC2018-ENG-LES-CAPELLOThis Wayne Bridge/John Terry soap opera has more legs and characters than a Bruce Lee flick. You would have thought that Bridge’s snub of his English national team call up would be spicy enough for one week. Hell, you may thought that the non-handshake heard ’round the world would be the final salvo in this fiasco. But no, Fabio Capello has thrown yet another log into this burning forest.

He has picked a side. Definitively. Sorta.

From The Guardian:

“Until the World Cup, John Terry will not be the captain again,” said Capello. “After the World Cup? If I remain as England manager? I think not. I asked for the captain to set an example for the young people; for the children and the fans. What he did was not good. I told him this and he understood.”

But in some clever political backtalking, Capello made sure to keep offenses on both sides at a minimal.

“But I took the decision only because of what happened with Wayne Bridge, nothing else. I didn’t ever consider taking John Terry out of the squad, just as I didn’t decide to take Wayne Bridge out. And I don’t believe the other players will have lost respect for him because they know his leadership qualities.”

Translation?

“Bridgey baby! Look at what I did for you! No captaincy for John Terry while I am in charge! . . . wait hold on, someone is calling me on the other line. Hello? Johnny? But Terry, sweety, I love and respect your work regardless of your mistakes. In the immortal words of that American victim Rodney King, ‘can’t we all just get along?!’ Hold on, I have someone else on the other line . . . “

Politics 101. Capello knows Bridge’s worth on the team, and is willing to make a pseudo sacrifice of John Terry in order to appease the situation, all the while standing by the side of his fallen captain by firmly and emphatically stating the importance of his play on the team itself.

See, everyones happy now right? Er, right . . .

With the situation still at boiling point level, do Capellos comments have the potential to do more harm than good? Terry isn’t captain, everyone understood why. I mean, does the situation need any more explaining? Or is the transparency of his dilemma explanation enough for his outspoken statement? It is obvious he must have informed Terry of his public condemnation, so is it safe to say this was all planned to bring Bridge back home? And will Bridge really abandon one of the precious few opportunities a footballer ever has in representing his country on the worlds biggest stage?

This is one story that desperately needs a happy ending.

Dumb move by Capello or the last ditch efforts of a desperate man? You make the call. Let your voice be heard in the comments below.

Nike Unveils a Selection of World Cup 2010 Kits, Made from Recycled Plastic Bottles

We’ve been waiting to see what the nine Nike flavoured teams (10 if you count England) would be wearing at World Cup 2010 for some time now, but all some was finally revealed yesterday, when Nike unveiled a mixture of said World Cup teams home and away kits at Battersea Power Station in London yesterday. The players in the above faux team photo, and the jerseys they’re sporting are as follows:

Top row, left to right: Clint Dempsey (USA away), Edson Braafheid (Netherlands away), Alexandre Pato (Brazil home), Lee Chung-Yong (South Korea away), Ryan Nelsen (New Zealand away);
Bottom row, left to right: Nani (Portugal away), Vince Grella (Australia away), Nenad Milijaš (Serbia away), Robert Koren (Slovenia home).

The headline grabbing thing about these jerseys is that all are apparently made from recycled plastic bottles. Which raises the obvious question: What? Also: How? Well, according to this Waste Aware Scotland story:

“To make the 2010 national team kits, Nike's fabric suppliers sourced discarded plastic bottles from Japanese and Taiwanese landfill sites and then melted them down to produce new yarn that was ultimately converted to fabric for the jerseys.

This process saves raw materials and reduces energy consumption by up to 30 percent compared to manufacturing virgin polyester. By using recycled polyester for its new range of national jerseys, Nike prevented nearly 13 million plastic bottles, totaling nearly 254,000 kg of polyester waste, from going into landfill sites. This amount would be enough to cover more than 29 football pitches. If the recycled bottles used to make the jerseys were laid end-to-end they would cover more than 3,000 kilometres, which is more than the entire coastline of South Africa.”

Maybe Indonesia’s Green World Cup 2022 bid is having an effect already?

- Once the above jerseys are for sale, you’ll be able to find them (and other World Cup 2010 shirts) in the World Cup Blog Store.

Wayne Bridge Turns His Back on the England Team and World Cup 2010

Posted: 25 Feb 2010 09:08 AM PST

waynebridgeenglandWorld Cup broadcasters around the world have been denied a potentially juicy World Cup 2010 soap opera storyline, because Wayne Bridge has made himself unavailable for England selection, and so definitely won’t be going to South Africa.

“I have thought long and hard about my position in the England football team in the light of the reporting and events over the last few weeks,” Bridge said in a statement released by his lawyers.
“It has always been an honour to play for England. However, after careful thought I believe my position in the squad is now untenable and potentially divisive.”
“Sadly therefore I feel for the sake of the team and in order to avoid what will be inevitable distractions, I have decided not to put myself forward for selection.
“I have today informed the management of this decision. I wish the team all the very best in South Africa.”

If you’re unfamiliar with the “the reporting and events over the last few weeks” that Bridge is referring to, then welcome back from the deserted island you’ve been living on. Basically it came to light that John Terry allegedly (are we still saying allegedly here? better safe than sorry) had an affair with Wayne Bridge’s former partner (and mother of Bridge’s children) Vanessa Perroncel. Terry was subsequently stripped of the England captaincy, but remains an important part of the team.

It’s very very tempting to interpret Bridge’s statement as “there’s no way I’m playing alongside that John Terry.” Could be that’s exactly what he means.

The interesting twist here is that with Ashley Cole injured, Wayne Bridge had a shot at going to World Cup 2010 as England’s first choice left back. Chance of a lifetime, but a chance he’s very much turned down today.
