No Such Thing As Too Casual

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 07:29 AM PDT

Just before Spain was busy being dispatched from their path along the impossible dream of winning the u19, u20 and u21 championships in the same summer, France was busy getting a lesson in late-game drama from Nigeria.

And then Gueida Fofana hit back with some drama and technique of his own, sending France on its way to a 3-2 victory in ET.

But perhaps even better than one of the best goals this summer is the fact he began celebrating almost as soon as the ball left his foot. A casually extraordinary goal and celebration all in one. This boy might be something.

Adrian Mutu Is Banned From Something. Shock. Awe.

Outside of doing lines off a hooker’s tender parts – presumably – is Adrian Mutu really a bad boy, or just an idiot? Both are probably on the scale, but the weight seems to shift towards the latter. His latest “drug ban” was for weight-loss supplements, after all.

It’s not like he rock-star smashed up his hotel or anything, but rather consumed some adult beverages a couple of nights before a game. Not terribly rebellious, just stupid.

And he’s been banned for life from the Romanian national team for it. Because that’s just what Adrian Mutu does – get banned from stuff.

Gabriel Tamas was sucked into his vicious vortex as well. Less fun for him as he’s 27 and Mutu is 32.

“The two players have been expelled for life from the national team”, Piturca stressed.

“It’s a pity but rules are strict and they should have known it,” he added.

Local media said that Mutu and Tamas, who had been involved in drinking bouts before, had gone out partying on Monday evening despite strict orders from the coach.

A bit difficult to blame them for not taking a friendly against the mighty Most Serene Republic of San Marino seriously, however.

Nonetheless, Adrian Mutu: excluded.

As you were.

Hey, Something Actually Came Out Of International Friendly Week

(All apologies to Northern Ireland and the Faroes…mostly the poor Faroes.)

Aside from infuriating injuries and some pretty decent highlight goals, anyway.

Shockingly, the happenings actually came from North America. For serious. Where Jurgen Klinsmann somewhat stole the show with his dancing and goal celebrations. He’s like a skinny Maradona, but less of a coke problem and more likable.

Oh, and someone messed their pants.

Or Omar Aranello forgot to remove the packet of hot sauce clenched betwixt his thighs before entering the pitch.

One of these scenarios is more likely than the other.

It’s not the hot sauce.

The Nigerian Kids Can Play

Going into youth tournaments, Nigeria is often considered one of the powerhouses, while also having their birth certificates considered very suspicious. The two aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive…

So they set about proving people wrong by both demolishing Croatia, amidst this epic strike from Terna Suswam, and then setting down for what seemed like it was going to be a child’s game of Duck, Duck, Goose before it was rudely interrupted.

See. Good and young.

It Appears Spain Is Just Better Than Everyone Else

So we know Spain as a nation is running through an extraordinary period of domination, and we also know that there appears to be little let-up for the rest of the poor world, as their youth teams are simply excellent. How excellent? Well they just won the u19 Euros today, defeating the Czech Republic. That puts their current trophy haul at…

World Cup
European Championships
u21 Euros
u19 Euros

And they’re considered the favorites in the current u20 World Cup. It appears all they have left to do is master that pesky u17 business.
