Euro 2012 Lineup Done And Dusted

Posted: 15 Nov 2011 02:52 PM PST

euro2012-1

Nothin’ left but the friendlies. Playoffs have ended, sadly for some – tragically, really, since none of the aggregates were even close – and the lineup is set with a couple of surprises, like Ireland and…no, just Ireland. The list of those who failed to RSVP is devoid of titanic names, leaving us with a heavy battle royale to be had in Polkraine.

The partygoers have been now split into two factions, one not boys and girls.

Spain & Germany

Spain
Germany

Here for the parting gifts.

Poland
Ukraine
Russia
Italy
France
Netherlands
Greece
England
Denmark
Sweden
Croatia
Czech Republic
Ireland
Portugal

The pots, which do not take into consideration that hostessing skills may not equate to footballing prowess.

Pot 1

Ukraine, Poland, Spain, Netherlands

Pot 2

Germany, Italy, England, Russia

Pot 3

Croatia, Greece, Sweden, Portugal*

Pot 4

Denmark*, France, Czech Republic, Ireland

* – Highly likely seeding. Portugal’s coefficient has yet to be announced.

This does leave the possibility of a group consisting of Spain, Germany, Portugal and France. Which, while probably not entirely optimal within the frame of the competition, would be delightful. Though utterly diabolic in its pre-tournament whining.

The draw is December 2nd – earplugs at the ready.

Your New World Champions: The DPRK

North Korea Japan WCup Soccer

No one really takes the Unofficial Football World Championships seriously; it’s merely a nice bit of fun. But even with its inherent flaws – the best team ever (as in…ever) is Scotland – no one probably expected the trophy to head to Pyongyang anytime soon. Or ever. But they beat former title holders Japan (Spain -> Argentina -> Japan) today 1-0 in a WCQ and thus….everyone bow down to the DPRK.

And you can be damn sure there will be a parade in the capital in the coming days. You know – to be coupled with the celebration of their actual title in South Africa, of course.

(Though they may not even be the most unexpected champion – the Netherlands Antilles takes that plaudit.)

And yes, he was watching.

Tomorrow’s match between Portugal and Bosnia-Herzegovina is just going to be the best.

Anyone care to keep a tally of the amount of distractions and projectiles tossed Cristiano’s way?

Chile Hosts The Break’s First Bender

WD3856844@ALBION-13-SL-08There are – or were, in a few cases -certain possibilities when it comes to international and the misbehavior of its participants: Gabriel Tamas might get drunk, Adrian Mutu might hit someone, Zlatan might care, the Czech national team may be found in the general vicinity of ladies of the night and someone somewhere in South America is going to get suspended for a party.

Players misbehave. It happens. But I’m not sure I’ve ever heard of someone showing up to training visibly sauced.

Welcome to the party, Chile.

Players land at training drunk; players land suspensions.

Chile kicked five players out of their 2014 World Cup qualifying squad after they returned late and drunk from an evening off, coach Claudio Borghi said on Wednesday.

The players had been given time off from midday to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, after morning training, Borghi said.

“Five players arrived 45 minutes late and not in a state adequate to a professional player. So I took the decision to withdraw them (from the squad),” the Argentine coach told a news conference.

He named the five as midfielders Arturo Vidal of Juventus, Jorge Valdivia of Palmeiras and Carlos Carmona of Atalanta, Birmingham City winger Jean Beausejour and West Bromwich Albion defender Gonzalo Jara who is on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Let’s try something here:

Gonzalo Jara, until recently, did play for WBA (he’s on loan down the ladder right now), sitting on the same backline as Gabriel Tamas. You’ll know Gabriel Tamas from such things as ‘got kicked off the Romanian national team permanently* for being a bit of a lush’, which also involved one Adrian Mutu. See where this is going?

Adrian Mutu is to blame for everything.

* – Apparently ‘banned for life’ is Romanian for ‘three games’, because they were back in October.

In case you were planning on skipping off to the wonderful land of the World Cup in 2014 and were waiting on details to make some travel plans, FIFA’s gone ahead and set in motion a few of the details, if we’re a long, long way from knowing the names of the participants. Unless you’re of the idea that FIFA’s corrupt and someone somewhere knows, in which case…start making phone calls.

The opening match is in Sao Paulo, with Brazil one of the teams on show, while the final will be the only place it can – the Maracana.

The half schedule is here, in pretty, pretty PDF.

Kickoff times, just because.

Opening Match: 17.00
Group Stage matches: 13.00, 16.00, 19.00, 22.00
Round of 16/Quarter-finals: 13.00, 17.00
Semi-finals: 17.00
Match for Third Place: 17.00
Final: 16.00

Also, there’s further information about the Confederations Cup here, but…who really cares?
