ANC: Côte d’Ivoire Vs Algeria Liveblog

Posted: 24 Jan 2010 10:21 AM PST

drogba_15541tSo with Ghana through to the Semi-Final, I’m here with the second of todays African Cup of Africa Cup of Nations Cup, or whatever you like to call it, liveblog – this time Côte d'Ivoire/Ivory Coast taking on Algeria, two teams we’ll get to know even better by South Africa in the Summer.

If you’re following any other games going on (apparently there is an important one in Milan) you’re welcome to join me, i’ll have half an eye on that game in Serie A in case it turns out to be a cracker.

Liveblog after the jump!

CAN QuarterFinal Liveblog: Angola vs. Ghana

Posted: 23 Jan 2010 10:43 PM PST

jabulaniThe group stages in the African Cup of Nations are finished, and now it’s time for the knockouts. We’re going to liveblogging all of the remaining matches here at World Cup Blog, so be sure to stop by and keep us company.

Today I’ll be handling Angola vs. Ghana, and Rob will be covering Cote d’Ivoire vs Algeria at 8:30pm Angola time (8:30 pm CET, 7:30pm UK, 2:30 Eastern US, 1:30 Central US, 11:30am, Pacific US.) Please stop in and keep us company!

The big question for this match: Will a Ghana without the injured Michael Essien be able to overcome the home advantage that propelled the Angolan team to top of group A in the group stage?

Interesting news of the weekend: Ghana is claiming “disgraceful intimidatory tactics” on the part of Angolan security. (Remember in the group stages, when Angola’s fellow group A teams Malawi and Mali had “scheduling difficulties” that left them unable to get training time before matches? But I’m sure this is all coincidence.)

World Cup Quiz: Fill in the Blanks

Posted: 23 Jan 2010 07:34 PM PST

Here’s a quiz to test your World Cup history knowledge and your ability to memorize trivial statistical data. There’s nothing to win, so no need to cheat and look up everything on the net. That would be like diving in a friendly. Take a look at the following tournament brackets and see if you can fill in the blanks and the year of the World Cup.

World Cup #1

World Cup #2

World Cup #3

Africa Cup of Nations 2010 Quarterfinals: Get Ready for the Knockouts, Pick Your Winners

Posted: 22 Jan 2010 06:55 AM PST

ali_knockoutTo be perfectly honest, I haven’t enjoyed the Africa Cup of Nations as much as I expected to so far. The Togo bus shooting was a bad start for all kinds of reasons, and then – Group D aside – the group stages failed to produce much of a climax. But that’s over now, and we’re ready for some proper knockout football in the quarterfinals.

Without a doubt, the quarterfinal to watch is Cameroon vs Egypt, a replay of the 2008 final. But the other three games should provide plenty of excitement too. Who do you see going through?

Quarterfinals
QF1 – Sunday, Jan 24th, Angola vs Ghana, 5pm
QF2 – Sunday, Jan 24th, Cote d’Ivoire vs Algeria, 8:30pm
QF3 – Monday, Jan 25th, Egypt vs Cameroon, 5pm
QF4 – Monday, Jan 25th, Zambia vs Nigeria, 8:30pm

Pick your winners: I’m picking Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire and Egypt to go through, plus a shock win for Zambia. Who do you see winning these games?

If you’re keen on bracketology, then I recommend a visit to Malawi World Cup Blog, where you can see what Angola 2010 looks like in bracket form.

Time translations:
5pm Angola = 5pm CET, 4pm UK, 11am US Eastern, 8am US Pacific.
8:30pm Angola = 8:30pm CET, 7:30pm UK, 2:30pm US eastern, 11:30am Pacific.

If you’re planning on watching the quarterfinals online in the USA or Canada then allow me to recommend purchasing the knockout round package from MyAfricanFootball.com. It’s a lot more legal and a lot more reliable that the streams you’ll find elsewhere, plus WorldCupBlog gets a cut of what you spend(!) Click the image for details. It costs $21.60 for access to all remaining games (plus you get on-demand access to replays and highlights and such). Click the banner to find out more:
