The German National Team Finally Gets Sexy Posted: 28 May 2009 12:40 PM PDT For years (or ever) the German national team - and occasionally German football as a whole - has been described as “efficient”, which is code for “unsexy”. Jogi Loew is trying to change this aura, and so on their Asian friendly tour, he brought along fencing star and girl who takes her clothes off in magazines, Britta Heidemann. (Ollie Kahn is there as well, but he’s not sexy and thus irrelevant.) And to boot, nothing works better as a motivational tool than a hot chick who can kick your ass with a sword (or epee). And this is Britta at her real job. [More photos at Football Fashion] |
French Team to Honour Louis Braille Posted: 28 May 2009 07:42 AM PDT
For the friendly against Nigeria in St Etienne on June 2nd, all the player names on French shirts will be printed in Braille. Not sure what the ref will do if he has to book a French player (I’m assuming he’ll cheat and look at the numbers) but this is a classy gesture from the French Football Federation. The shirts will later be auctioned, with the money going to the French federation for the blind. A simple Braille alphabet is below, and I’ll leave you to work out whose shirt Domenech is holding up as an example: More detailed Braille alphabet here. [Tip of the hat to Jeremy who sent us this story] |

Photo: Soccer City Coming Along Nicely in Johannesburg Posted: 26 May 2009 03:06 PM PDT
I know everyone’s a little worried about stadia not being completed on time in South Africa, but this recent photo (top) of the Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg is nice and reassuring. Definitely more reassuring than the older photo (bottom). Soccer City is being massively upgraded, with an exterior “designed to resemble an African pot” (see above, definitely not hating it) and a capacity of 94,700. It’s the centrepiece of World Cup 2010, and will host five group games at World Cup 2010 (including the opener), one second round game, one quarter-final and the World Cup 2010 Final itself. And it’s looking pretty good if you ask me. |
