UEFA Admits Ukraine’s Goal Was Good

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 09:35 AM PDT

The disallowed goal of Ukraine roundabout the hour mark is one of great contention, considering there were other factors leading up to the ball crossing the goal line – such as an uncalled offside.

However, UEFA’s stance on the matter – and sit down for this one – has come down: wrong decision. Which is likely the first time anyone from UEFA has admitted to a refereeing error. Ever. Because it actually is.

“The ball crossed the line,” said Collina. “That was unfortunate. It would have been better not to have it.”

But the man who was once widely regarded as the world’s best referee claimed it was the first failure in “thousands of matches” in which so-called additional assistant referees, who police the goalline, had been used.

“This is the only problem we have had,” he said. “It’s one negative decision in three years of Champions League and two years of Europa League and 24 matches in the Euro.

There are no words.

Oleg Blokhin’s Lookin’ To Rumble

No, these certainly weren’t the most fearsome host countries in history, but it is a bit strange to see a second straight knockout series without some good old fashioned home cookin’. (The onus now falls on France.) And Oleg Blokhin is rather upset about this, overreacting to a question from a journalist by challenging him to a fight outside. Which sounds like a terrible idea, because Oleg is far too ugly to be a safe opponent.

When questioned by the journalist about the physical condition of the Ukrainian team the burly former Ballon d’Or winning international striker snapped: “Respect my job. Let’s go this one-on-one. You want to go with me?

“Let’s have a ‘man conversation’.”

When the journalist involved in the exchange stood up a UEFA moderator stepped in to defuse the spat but Blokhin was undeterred.

“You should respect that I played football? Did you play football? Respect my job and me. I won’t allow anyone to criticise my team. If you’re a man, go with me. One on one.”

Then again, this is a fairly positive step considering some of his musings in the past…

A Very German Home, Plus Thomas Mueller Does Risotto

This home in Germany certainly wins an award for patriotism, though the design gurus and neighborhood council will look upon it with nothing short of derision. The homeowner’s name is Dennis Rheinhardt. He’s presumably single, though “family” is noted in the caption. (Can’t be true. Just can’t.)

Meanwhile, Thomas Mueller – and the smile only a mother or zookeeper could love – cooks risotto below. Enjoy.
