Nike Unveils a Selection of World Cup 2010 Kits, Made from Recycled Plastic Bottles

We’ve been waiting to see what the nine Nike flavoured teams (10 if you count England) would be wearing at World Cup 2010 for some time now, but all some was finally revealed yesterday, when Nike unveiled a mixture of said World Cup teams home and away kits at Battersea Power Station in London yesterday. The players in the above faux team photo, and the jerseys they’re sporting are as follows:

Top row, left to right: Clint Dempsey (USA away), Edson Braafheid (Netherlands away), Alexandre Pato (Brazil home), Lee Chung-Yong (South Korea away), Ryan Nelsen (New Zealand away);
Bottom row, left to right: Nani (Portugal away), Vince Grella (Australia away), Nenad Milijaš (Serbia away), Robert Koren (Slovenia home).

The headline grabbing thing about these jerseys is that all are apparently made from recycled plastic bottles. Which raises the obvious question: What? Also: How? Well, according to this Waste Aware Scotland story:

“To make the 2010 national team kits, Nike's fabric suppliers sourced discarded plastic bottles from Japanese and Taiwanese landfill sites and then melted them down to produce new yarn that was ultimately converted to fabric for the jerseys.

This process saves raw materials and reduces energy consumption by up to 30 percent compared to manufacturing virgin polyester. By using recycled polyester for its new range of national jerseys, Nike prevented nearly 13 million plastic bottles, totaling nearly 254,000 kg of polyester waste, from going into landfill sites. This amount would be enough to cover more than 29 football pitches. If the recycled bottles used to make the jerseys were laid end-to-end they would cover more than 3,000 kilometres, which is more than the entire coastline of South Africa.”

Maybe Indonesia’s Green World Cup 2022 bid is having an effect already?

- Once the above jerseys are for sale, you’ll be able to find them (and other World Cup 2010 shirts) in the World Cup Blog Store.

Wayne Bridge Turns His Back on the England Team and World Cup 2010

Posted: 25 Feb 2010 09:08 AM PST

waynebridgeenglandWorld Cup broadcasters around the world have been denied a potentially juicy World Cup 2010 soap opera storyline, because Wayne Bridge has made himself unavailable for England selection, and so definitely won’t be going to South Africa.

“I have thought long and hard about my position in the England football team in the light of the reporting and events over the last few weeks,” Bridge said in a statement released by his lawyers.
“It has always been an honour to play for England. However, after careful thought I believe my position in the squad is now untenable and potentially divisive.”
“Sadly therefore I feel for the sake of the team and in order to avoid what will be inevitable distractions, I have decided not to put myself forward for selection.
“I have today informed the management of this decision. I wish the team all the very best in South Africa.”

If you’re unfamiliar with the “the reporting and events over the last few weeks” that Bridge is referring to, then welcome back from the deserted island you’ve been living on. Basically it came to light that John Terry allegedly (are we still saying allegedly here? better safe than sorry) had an affair with Wayne Bridge’s former partner (and mother of Bridge’s children) Vanessa Perroncel. Terry was subsequently stripped of the England captaincy, but remains an important part of the team.

It’s very very tempting to interpret Bridge’s statement as “there’s no way I’m playing alongside that John Terry.” Could be that’s exactly what he means.

The interesting twist here is that with Ashley Cole injured, Wayne Bridge had a shot at going to World Cup 2010 as England’s first choice left back. Chance of a lifetime, but a chance he’s very much turned down today.

Complete List of World Cup 2010 Team Training Bases (Plus Poorly Researched Assumptions)

Posted: 24 Feb 2010 01:29 PM PST

international-rescue-tracy-islandWhile the English tabloids are busy panicking about the fact that buildings have to be, you know, built, FIFA has released the list of World Cup 2010 bases for all 32 teams. This is where each squad will live, sleep, eat, breathe, train, watch bad movies on DVD and play XBox between World Cup matches.

World Cup HQ is presumably massively important. It’s where the players and staff will spend the majority of their time, and so a happy World Cup base should theoretically translate into a happy and successful World Cup team.

Obviously I don’t have too many details about what each location has to offer. I could do some Googling for you, but suspect the result would be each location claiming either “world class” or “state of the art” facilities. Or maybe “state of the art world class” facilities. Instead, here’s the list released by FIFA today, followed by a few ill-informed snap judgements:

Algeria, Zimbali Lodge
Argentina, High Performance Centre
Australia, Kloofzicht Lodge
Brazil, The Fairway
Cameroon, Oyster Box
Chile, Ingwenyama Conference Center
Denmark, Simola Hotel Country Club
England, Bafokeng Sports Campus
France, Pezula Resort Hotel & Spa
Germany, Velmore Hotel
Ghana, Rhoode Valley
Greece, Beverly Hills Hotel
Honduras, The Indaba Hotel
Italy, Leriba Lodge
Ivory Coast, Riverside Hotel & Conference
Japan, Fancourt Hotel & Country Club
Mexico, Thaba Ya Batswana
Netherlands, Hilton Sandton
New Zealand, Serengeti Estate
Nigeria, Hemshire
North Korea, Protea Hotel Midrand
Paraguay, Woodridge Country Estate
Portugal, Valley Lodge
Serbia, Sunnyside Park Hotel
Slovakia, The Villas Luxury Suite Hotel
Slovenia, Hyde Park Southern Sun
Spain, NWU Campus
South Africa, Southern Sun Grayston
South Korea, Hunters Rest Hotel
Switzerland, Emerald Resort & Casino
United States, Irene Country Lodge
Uruguay, Protea Hotel Kimberley

Source: Associated Press

Assumptions I’ve made based entirely on the names of the various bases:

  • Argentina will attempt to use the power of science to maximize team potential at the High Performance Centre. I see a lot of graphs, which Diego Maradona will completely ignore.
  • The Brazil squad will play a lot of golf at The Fairway, with Robinho repetitively waving his golf club around the ball in a circular motion before teeing off.
  • France will be very very relaxed at the Pezula Resort Hotel & Spa. Until Domenech names his starting eleven anyway.
  • Cote d’Ivoire will ignore actual training, and will instead have a lot of roundtable business meetings at the Riverside Hotel & Conference.
  • Japan’s time at the Fancourt Hotel & Counry Club will make the Blue Samurai squad ever so slightly snooty.
  • The Switzerland squad will lose all their money playing poker and fruit machines and have many many wild nights out. But it’s OK, because what happens in the Emerald Resort & Casino, stays in the Emerald Resort & Casino.
  • I have no idea what Cameroon will get up to at The Oyster Box, but would be very interested to find out.
