Donetsk Turns Bus Stops Into Goals

This is an excellent idea to promote Euro 2012 in the city, and it might not even sport a lower cost on materials for normal bus stops. (Shot in the dark.)

It’s going to be a terrible idea the first time an old lady gets her nose broken because some kid decided to chip a Moskvitch from across the street. Because that’s probably going to happen this summer – a lot.

Eric Cantona Thinks Everyone Can Win A World Cup

Soak up that photo for a moment. The man can’t be stopped, and neither can his drooping blouse.

Two bold claims from Planet Eric this week:

i. The US will win a World Cup within the next 20 years. (So one of the next five.)
ii. The Catalonia national team could win a World Cup.

Alright – very bold claims.

Referring to America, he says:

"Football in that country is just starting," he said. "I've seen nine-year-old players who are mini geniuses and so with all the coaches and input being done, that country will win a World Cup within the next 20 years.

And…

"Like Cruyff at Barcelona we are training them in a certain way, to love football — and teaching them to win of course. There’s a lot of work to be done. If the US team got to a quarter-final or semi-final we'd be very proud.

“This is what Barcelona did. I think a Catalan team could win a World Cup."

Marca then set about matching them up on paper.

That’s a touch weak at the top to be winning a World Cup, one would think, without that Maradona or Messi-esque individual brilliance capable of attacking a trophy all on their own, but the midfield and central defense are dreamy. And get run out on Sundays quite a bit.

Olivier Giroud & Mathieu Debuchy Sittin’ In A Tree

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 10:24 AM PST

Olivier Grioud scores a goal, celebrates by giving Mathieu Debuchy some man-on-man love. And it’s not like this is some unknown occurrence in football – it happens from time to time. However…

It seems increasingly improbable for a late developer to make his way from football’s lower reaches on to the international stage. Little wonder Olivier Giroud compared the moment he effectively planted his flag at the top of his own footballing mountain to an “explosion of joy”.

Someone tell Olivier to get control of himself.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar Scores, Eats Some Turf

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 05:21 PM PST

A nasty mashing of the heads occurred during the Dutch victory over England during the international friendlies will surely have all clubs involved utterly thrilled to send everyone off to the next midweek friendly. The two gentleman in question, Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Chris Smalling, both landed in the hospital, with Smalling sounding the worse of the two despite the fact that he wasn’t semi-conscious at best, having a turf dinner – and especially since Huntelaar scored on the play. Probably a different type of grass than he was used to enjoying while playing for Ajax, however.

Egypt’s Ahmed Hassan Sets New Cap Record

A pretty astonishing achievement was had for Egyptian captain Ahmed Hassan today, earning his 179th cap, which requires an advanced degree simply to count that high. The list is impressive stuff, if only because the top 5 includes not one but two named ‘Hassan’ from Egypt.

He’s also not done, which leaves the possibility of a 200th cap in sight.

The list, via Wikipedia, undoubtedly steeped in truth:

179 – Ahmed Hassan, Egypt
178 – Mohamed Al-Deayea, Saudi Arabia
178 – Claudio Suárez, Mexico
169 – Hossam Hassan, Egypt
167 – Iván Hurtado, Ecuador
167 – Vitālijs Astafjevs, Latvia
164 – Cobi Jones, United States
164 – Adnan Al-Talyani, United Arab Emirates
158 – Sami Al-Jaber, Saudi Arabia
157 – Martin Reim, Estonia

Plus he had good things to say and deflected attention away from his record and onto the tragedy in Port Said. All around a very excellent performance from him.

"Of course I'm happy with that achievement, but my happiness is not complete. I'm still saddened over the death of Ahly fans in the Port Said disaster," the evergreen midfielder, who departed Ahly last summer to join arch-rivals Zamalek, said on his official website after the game.

"I've waited for that achievement for so long, but I hoped to get it in better circumstances."

"My career with Egypt is not over yet. Some people said I carry on playing with the national team to earn a personal achievement, this is completely untrue," he added.

"I will continue to serve the national team as long as I'm able to perform at the highest level."

This man should be hoisted aloft everywhere he goes just to save his creaking legs so that we can all see number 200 achieved.
