Hallo and welcome to the liveblog of the final round of World Cup Group A. It’s Mexico vs Uruguay and France vs South Africa, and we’ll be liveblogging both games simultaneously. Because we’re just that good.

Basically: Mexico and Uruguay are both through if they draw. But if one of them loses, then either France or South Africa can take a second place, if they score enough to make up the difference. We also have a more in depth explanation of the Group A scenario should you want to do some pre-match homework. Both games will kick off at 4pm local time (10am US eastern). Join in below.

Round of 16 Qualification Scenarios: Group F

Posted: 22 Jun 2010 02:27 AM PDT

letter-fThe third round of group matches starts today, and so each day for the next four, we’ll know the final fates of two World Cup groups. We’ve been going through, group by group, and showing how each team can (or can’t) make it to the round of 16. This time, it’s the turn of Group F: Italy, New Zealand, Paraguay and Slovakia.

Remaining matches: Slovakia vs. Italy, Paraguay vs. New Zealand

For more on the rules of this group stage, check out our article on World Cup group stage tie-breakers

Paraguay

4 points from 2 matches, +2 goal difference
Wins the group with:
* A win over New Zealand (regardless of other results)
* A draw with New Zealand, combined with a Slovakia win over Italy
* A draw with New Zealand, combined with an Italy win that leaves Paraguay ahead of Italy on goal difference / tie-breakers.
Qualifies with above scenarios plus
* Any draw against New Zealand (regardless of other results)
* A loss to New Zealand, combined with an Italy-Slovakia draw
* A loss to New Zealand, combined with a Slovakia win that leaves Paraguay ahead of Slovakia on goal difference / tie-breakers.

Italy

2 points from 2 matches, 0 goal difference
Wins the group with:
* A win over Slovakia combined with a New Zealand win that leaves Italy ahead of New Zealand on goal difference / tie-breakers.
* A win over Slovakia combined with a Paraguay-New Zealand draw that leaves Italy ahead of Paraguay on goal difference / tie-breakers.
Qualifies with these scenarios plus:
* Any win over Slovakia (regardless of other results)
* A draw with Slovakia combined with a Paraguay win over New Zealand.
* A draw with Slovakia, combined with a Paraguay-New Zealand draw that leaves Italy ahead of New Zealand on goals scored (GD would be tied). If they draw by the same score, it could come down to the horror situation of drawing of lots.

New Zealand

2 points from 2 matches, 0 goal difference
Wins the group with:
* A win over Paraguay, combined with an Italy-Slovakia draw
* A win over Paraguay, combined with an Italy win that leaves New Zealand ahead of Italy on goal difference / tie-breakers. (Basically beating Paraguay by more goals than Italy beats Slovakia)
Qualifies with these scenarios plus:
* Any win over Paraguay (regardless of other result)
* A draw with Paraguay, combined with an Italy-Paraguay draw that leaves New Zealand ahead of Italy on goals scored (again, brings up the thought of drawing lots).

Slovakia

1 point from 2 matches, -2 goal difference
Slovakia cannot win the group

Will qualify with:
* A win over Italy, combined with a Paraguay win or draw in the other match.
* A win over Italy, combined with a New Zealand win that leaves Slovakia ahead of Paraguay on goal difference / tie-breakers.

DV758958Team of the Day: Iberian peninsula? Sort of a mixed bag here. Both teams have arguments for and against. Spain played brilliantly but once again couldn’t find that “goal” thing they’re always yapping about, save for David Villa. And Portugal hit 7 against….nobody. North Korea just didn’t show in the second half. It was astonishing and unwatchable, like fish in a barrel an automatic weapon. They simply quit.

Push.

Player of the Day:
It’s probably Tiago, who was exemplary and effective (!) in replacing Deco in the Portuguese midfield – even before North Korea torpedoed itself. Which officially makes this the strangest World Cup in history.

Quote of the Day:
From French camp – no kidding!

Apparently the unrest in the French camp is down to one man – bullied midfielder Yoann Gourcuff. When chief tormentor Franck Ribery arranged a night out at a 'gentleman's club' for the French players, Gourcuff opted to stay at home. Ribery allegedly confronted him and said: "Does your mother not allow you to go, you homosexual slut?"

Apparently cavorting with strippers is more acceptable than spending a night at home. Is Ribery becoming the face of disgust with the modern footballer?

Don’t answer that.

Goal of the Day: Or try goal of the World Cup – who cares if it’s in the Swedish second division?

Preview: Greece vs. Argentina

THE BIG PICTURE

For Greece there’s a bit on the line – for all teams in the group, really – but let’s be frank: most will be tuning in for another glimpse at the man of the tourney thus far, Lionel Messi. He dazzled once again against South Korea and will be up against a Greek defense which has its holes. Diego’s already said it’d be a “sin” to sit Messi, and he might just be right.

The qualification story is on the Greek side, however, and it doesn’t look pretty. Up against Nigeria they needed a red card, a horribly deflected goal and a goalkeeping howler to nab their first World Cup win. Now they face the world’s best player, one of the tournament’s best teams and a simply monstrous attack. The deck is good and stacked, and they’ll need to channel 2004 to even have a prayer.

WHAT’S AT STAKE

For Argentina, first place in the group is all but official. It’d take a loss and a South Korean win with a five goal swing in South Korea’s goal differential favor to fall to second (or an epic thumping from Greece).

For Greece…well, it’s a bit complicated:

Greece: 3 points from 2 matches, -1 goal differential
* If Greece beat Argentina, and Nigeria beats or draws with South Korea, Greece qualifies.
* If Greece beat Argentina, and South Korea beats Nigeria, it goes to goal difference between Argentina, South Korea, and Greece.
* If Greece draw with Argentina, and South Korea beats Nigeria, Greece is eliminated.
* If Greece draw with Argentina and South Korea draw with Nigeria, it goes to total goals scored, which Greece leads by 1.
* If Greece lose to Argentina and South Korea take any points from Nigeria, Greece is eliminated.
* If Greece lose to Argentina and South Korea lose to Nigeria, Greece is eliminated on goal difference.

[For the rest of Group B's breakdown, click this big blue sentence.]

Suffice it to say, Greece has a massive uphill climb ahead.

Bet on Greece vs. Argentina

OUR PREDICTION

Little Lionel’s taken over thus far in the World Cup – there’s no reason to think he’ll do otherwise against a weak defense. 3-0 Argentina.

Match Review & Highlights: Spain 2 – Honduras 0

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 02:46 PM PDT

DV759115

So what’s the verdict? Either Spain are going to be scary good when they finally start clicking or they’re in epic amounts of trouble when they play a good team because they can’t finish their chances.

It was every bit the game expected everywhere except the one place that matters: the scoreboard. They could’ve doubled Portugal’s tally against a defense that cares without breaking a sweat, but didn’t. Fernando Torres might’ve missed enough to challenge Ronaldo’s record of 15 and David Villa, one of the world’s most refined finishers, thwacked a penalty off the adboards. Despite the win, and they’ll be happy about that, they’re a long way from “firing on all cylinders”. Not the best of news with their World Cup lives on the line against Chile.

(Oh, and David Villa bitch slapped a Honduran, but wasn’t sent off. Business as usual, then.)

Where to start? The best advice is to either watch the game again or find some proper in-depth highlights, which may cut the game down to 80 mins or so. Spain were fluid, smooth and everything they were against Switzerland, right down to the scoring, or lack thereof. The difference here? David Villa got it right twice, if one via a deflection, and that’s more than enough for the win – goal differential is another story.

Best-case scenario creeping into necessity was getting on the scoreboard early for Spain, so as not to reawaken the demons of Switzerland – not quite as much of an issue with Honduras’ defense nowhere near the Alps of the Nati. David Villa kindly obliged in the 17th with a furious solo run and strike from just about his arse.

The rest of the half played out with a surprising and rather disappointing 1-0 lead for Spain before it descended into some lipsticks and handbags right before the whistle after David’s foot had been stepped on.

David would continue his run of headline-making with a second goal early in the second half, aided by a deflection. Or perhaps scored by a deflection.

And finally, David put his hat-trick wide right to complete the Good Villa/Bad Villa show.

Given the run of games thus far, it’s pretty rare that a team can complain about the nature of a win – Spain are luckily in that bin. The performance was great but against a pretty ordinary side and their efficiency was bottom drawer.

This sets up a cracker for the Group H finale:

grouph

Chile play Spain in what should be an enthralling guns blazing shootout, while Switzerland will likely nab a full three against Honduras. So Spain will need a win to ensure qualification – a draw and they’re likely toast in the groups.

From favorites to survival in a flash.

THE BIG PICTURE
It’s all been getting rather serious in the Nigeria camp, with Sani Kaita reportedly receiving over 1,000 death threats since his sending off against Greece. Nigeria certainly haven’t had the tournament they planned. Both sides have been swept away by the quality of Argentina but a defeat to Greece has angered many Nigerian fans who felt their side should’ve played much, much better against weaker opposition. Fortunately the group remains wide open and both nations stand a chance of going through to the next stage with a win. Argentina are expected to beat Greece so this affectively becomes a second place cup final. It won’t fill Nigeria with confidence that against Asian opposition, only one African side has ever come out victorious in 8 World Cup attempts, with Cameroon beating Saudi Arabia 1-0 in 2002. They should be spurred on by the fact they still have a chance despite two group losses and will keeping everything crossed that Argentina can do them a favour on the final day.

WHAT’S AT STAKE
Group B Qualification Picture
group-b

The good news for the Nigerians: Somehow, despite an atrocious tournament, they can still qualify for the knockout stages, and realistically too, with a win here. The bad news: they are without a win in their last seven World Cup matches, losing six of those in the process. If they want to give themselves a genuine chance they have to turn that stat around. They’ll be expecting more from some of their big Premier League stars like Yakubu whilst everyone by now knows what to expect from the South Koreans. They’ll know they can’t rely on Greece to get them a decent result in the other game, so despite a 3 point advantage over the Nigerians, they know just how important a win is themselves.

Bet on Nigeria vs. South Korea

OUR PREDICTION
Despite the romance of Nigeria somehow sneaking through on the final day, I just can’t see them overcoming the South Koreans who are gritty and determined, with a lot of skill to match. They’ll give it a real good go but South Korea will finish 2-1 victors.

fra-sa

THE BIG PICTURE
Both teams have just one point to their name, but neither are mathematically finished in this World Cup. Not yet anyway.

The France team is a shambles though, with Nicolas Anelka being sent home, arguments between coaching staff and players and the whole situation breaking the hearts of fans. There’s really no way of knowing how the team will perform in this game, but the buildup has been about as unhelpful as possible.

South Africa has been well supported by the home fans, and made an encouraging start by drawing 1-1 with Mexico, but followed that up by losing 3-0 to Uruguay. South Africa is in serious danger of being the first host nation team to fail to make the Second Round.

WHAT’S AT STAKE
group a

A draw or defeat for either team mean certain elimination. What both needs is a win and then to hope that there’s a winner in the Mexico vs Uruguay game. After that it’s all about goal difference, so whoever wins this game needs to win it big. Read our Group A qualification scenarios post for more detail.

KICKOFF
4pm local time, 10am US eastern.

Bet on France vs. South Africa

OUR PREDICTION
This could be a spectacle. With both teams needing to win big, I see it being an open and exciting game. South Africa may not make the knockouts, but they could take advantage of a disgruntled France and claim an exciting 3-2 win.

mex-uru-new

THE BIG PICTURE
Mexico and Uruguay can both guarantee progress to the knockouts with a draw. But neither will be keen to face likely Group B winners Argentina in the Round of 16, so the two may compete to top the group rather than finishing second.

WHAT’S AT STAKE
group a

Uruguay is currently top on goal difference, and will probably be keen to keep it that way. The celeste proved against France that they’re very much capable of playing for a goalless draw if needed, so it will all depend on whether Mexico wants to push for the win and first place, or accept the draw and second place, and the likely game against Argentina.

The risk for both teams is that a loss mathematically exposes them to the threat of France or South Africa taking second place, should either of those team rack up a massive win when they meat. Group A qualification scenarios explained in more detail here, but basically a draw is the least risky option for both teams.

KICKOFF
4pm local time, 10am US eastern.

Bet on Mexico vs. Uruguay

OUR PREDICTION
I think Mexico will try for the win, but try to do so without (to paraphrase Diego Maradona) “putting all their beef on the grill” and exposing themselves. Uruguay are defensively strong enough to withstand a half-hearted attack, so this finishes 0-0.

Match Review & Highlights: Chile 1-0 Switzerland

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 10:00 AM PDT

gonzalez2

Switzerland were down to 10 men after 30 minutes, but very nearly held out against Chile. Only nearly though, as Chile won 1-0 with a 75th minute goal from Mark Gonzalez.

Here’s what Swiss right back Valon Behrami was sent off for in the 31st minute:

You can see Behrami was tussling with Chile #8 Artruo Vidal, and was attempting to use his arms to break free. Looks like an overreaction from Vidal, and from the referee, so Behrami is unlucky to get a red card. On the other hand, keep your elbows down.

From there on out, Switzerland defended with a high offside trap, which Chile attempted to pass their way though. When Chile did succeed, they came up against goalkeeper Diego Benaglio, who was in the sort of form that kept Spain off the scoresheet in Switzerland’s previous game.

Alexis Sanchez – who’d been showing off his stepovers down the right flank – had the ball in the net from a long range strike and spent a good while celebrating before being told his shot had deflected off a player in an offside position.

Finally, two Chilean subs combined for Chile to make it 1-0 in the 75th minute:

Esteban Paredes seemed to have taken the ball far too wide when going around Benaglio, but kept his composure and crossed to the far post for South African born winger Mark Gonzalez to head down and make it 1-0.

Chile pushed for a second (because goal difference is going to matter in Group H) and that allowed Switzerland one final chance to equalize, but striker Eren Derdiyok somehow shot wide from just outside the six yard box. So, 1-0 to Chile, which gives them six points but doesn’t guarantee progression, especially as they still have to face Spain in the final round of Group H games.
