North Korea vs Brazil, as Edited for State TV by Kim Jong-il Posted: 17 Jun 2010 05:59 AM PDT You heard the rumour that North Korean state TV will be showing heavily edited highlights of the World Cup? Well, here’s your first look. Not really. Before anyone freaks out, let me make it clear that this is fake. Kim Jong-il did not edit these highlights for state TV. Rather, epmnz edited the highlights for lols on YouTube. I’d still love to know if that rumour was true though, and if so, what exactly said highlights look like. Maybe epmnz is auditioning for the job?

Posted: 16 Jun 2010 11:50 PM PDT THE BIG PICTURE Since the match, Malouda has been forced to deny rumours of a bust up, whilst William Gallas, according to some, is nurturing an injury which may not be quite as bad as suggested, such is his discontent with the coach. How bizarre it is then, that if Domenech wins this game he’ll become the most successful French manager in their history, piping Michel Hidalgo to 42 victories. Mexico on the contrary, enter the game relieved to have the South Africa clash out the way, now very much looking up rather than down. They survived the opening day onslaught from the hosts and can start to firmly establish themselves in the tournament. WHAT’S AT STAKE OUR PREDICTION FAN RESOURCES

Posted: 16 Jun 2010 11:40 PM PDT THE BIG PICTURE This one won’t fill the stadium, that’s for sure. Both are coming off losses, with Greece putting in a particularly dismal performance. Their attack was reminiscent of the “hope for a set piece” tactic of yore, but this time the defense was completely missing. No attack, no defense, no prayer. Nigeria on the other hand were a bit more resilient, more compact under Lars Lagerback, but still had difficulties putting anything together going forward outside of the hole left by Diego Maradona’s tactics and relied upon Vincent Enyeama to keep Lionel Messi’s brilliant individual play from running up a goal tally. Both teams need to improve, or else… WHAT’S AT STAKE Quite simply: the World Cup. Win and stay alive. Lose and go home. A draw will keep each alive, but judging by how well South Korea played and Argentina’s individual talent – not to mention their three point head starts – the mountainous climb to the knockouts would be Himalayan. So both will play as if they want to play a third meaningful game. OUR PREDICTION It wouldn’t be particularly unfair to say that Greece have put on the weakest showing at the World Cup so far. They so easily could’ve lost 4-0 to a side which was very, very good on the day, but isn’t top tier. Nigeria could’ve lost by an even wider margin, but Argentina is individually top tier and the Africans were more impressive. If Lars gets his cards right from the outset, they should make Greece the first team to head home. 1-0 Nigeria. FAN RESOURCES

WorldCupBlog’s South Africa Meetups Posted: 16 Jun 2010 10:09 PM PDT
But a community isn’t just about typing to each other over the web. It’s about fans meeting, sharing a pint, and talking about the sport we love. With that in mind, during this World Cup we’re going to start what we hope will be a long tradition at WorldCupBlog, with three live fan meetups in South Africa. The details are still a little sketchy. We know that thousands of fans are descending on South Africa for the event, but we have never done this before and we don’t know how many of our regular readers will be in South Africa, and how many want to meet up. We don’t have times and exact places set up yet, but here are the dates and cities we will be meeting up during the tournament: 21 June in Cape Town : morning before Portugal v. North Korea Right now, we just want to know what level of interest there is in getting together. Those of us who are going to be in South Africa reporting on the World Cup are really excited to meet any fans and readers and get to know some of the people that make the site what it is. We hope that you are interested too. So – the question at this point is – who’s game?
Preview: Argentina vs. South Korea Posted: 16 Jun 2010 08:56 PM PDT THE BIG PICTURE South Korea also looked good while winning their first game, 2-0 against Greece, so they’re top of Group B on goal difference right now. Big name Park Ji-Sung scored the second in that game with a direct run and finish, but South Korea played some proper team football. Will be interesting to see if that ethic is good enough to take on the talents of the albiceleste. More at South Korea World Cup Blog. The World Cup Awards: June 16th, 2010. Posted: 16 Jun 2010 07:24 PM PDT Team of the Day, Man of the Day: When looking at the Swiss it’s pretty easy to forget they’re headed by one of the best coaches in the world presently, of his lengthy generation and some may even say history. But it took very little genius to realize that Spain were going to press them back…and back…and back…and that either they could do it involuntarily in tatters, or do it by plan, giving them a chance. By plan it was, and was it magnificent. Of course that’s not to say Ottmar Hitzfeld doesn’t deserve the credit – he’s not known as a miracle man for nothin’ Pretty damn rated now. Of course unlike Cristiano, he played exceptionally well and his team actually won. Maybe CR should try that with Portugal sometime. Apparently throwing one’s self in the air is now grounds for Man of the Match. Do you see what this World Cup has descended to? The Day Aptly Summed Without Words Award:

The Vuvuzela Song: More Brilliance, Less Buzzing. Posted: 16 Jun 2010 04:19 PM PDT There’s a burgeoning sensation, and it’s called The Vuvuzela Song, sung by Dave Hanson. I actually spotted it whilst looking for another vuvuzela song – I’ve been afflicted, I say! – and this simply blew that one out of the water. Largely because you so rarely hear that thing they call the vuvuzela… …ela, ela. (Here’s the original video via Corriere dello Sport – be forewarned: more vuvuzela.) |
